It's been a busy week here at Warrior Fitness Camp in Davie. All of our Group Fitness Classes have been trying to conquer the box jump. The box jump can be a bit of a scary thing at first. But with some pointers and progression steps you will be conquering it in no time!
I love the Box Jump for so many reasons. You really can get one of the best workouts throwing this exercise movement into the mix. Not only are you getting an awesome leg workout but cardiovascular as well.
Few Tips to start off with.
- Start off with a small box. Conquer jumping up on top of the small box before moving on. If you are still nervous if you can jump onto the small box, simply have someone video you jumping next to it and see if you can clear it first.
- Then move onto a larger box. Repeat these steps. If your still fearful if you can make it or not, have someone video you jumping next to it and see if you can clear that height.
- I would stand about a foot length away maybe a tad more from the box is my most comfortable place.
- Spring Load and launch! You can have no hesitation. The moment you hesitate you will probably end up hitting the box and that always stinks!
- You can use the padded box too, this is always excellent when just getting used to the box jump. If you fail, well it doesn't hurt like hitting the wooden or metal box.
- Practice your tuck jumps and jump squats. These exercise movements will build your explosiveness and power.
- I always reccommend stepping down from the box. If you're in a competition yes you're jumping down. But as per the normal person that just wants to get a great workout in, simply step down. I have seen a lot of people roll their ankles, and get fractures. Nobody has time for that!
Remember, most of the time its FEAR that ruins your box jump experience. If it scares you well that means you MUST CONQUER IT! Visualize yourself jumping onto the box. Believe in yourself.
